Orenda (n)

A mystical force present in all people that empowers them to affect the world or effect change in their own lives.

I've loved art since I was a child, always drawing on whatever I could find. Art has always been in my life, changing and morphing over the years into a practice that is not only for my own sake and sanity, but also to speak to an audience. Their thoughts, opinions, and feelings are what breathe life into the piece; art isn't created simply to be made but to be viewed. For this purpose, the goal of my work is to show the audience what I bring to the plate and let it affect them in their own way.

Some of my work explores an in-between of ugly and beautiful. I want to capture the beauty in harsh things so that we may be able to find beauty in ourselves, including society and what we've made it into. Other works explore life and the juxtaposition between harsh realities and the whimsy we carry from childhood. There is a way to be hopeful when things turn ugly and change needs to happen.

I have found my orenda in the arts through many mediums over the years; crochet being what drives me now. Through this, I hope to be given a chance to affect the audience in exactly the way they need. If you haven't found what drives you yet, maybe my art can help you on your journey. If you have, what keeps you moving? What drives you to be a better you?

What's your orenda?
